LAFAYETTE, Ala. - The Cajuns played in their fourth overtime match of the season, resulting in a 1-1 tie against South Alabama. With only one match remaining in the regular season, UL is currently sitting in ninth place in the Sun Belt Conference standings.
"The team played very hard and I'm proud of the effort," said head coach Scot Wieland. "However a tie is a tie and we need a win at this point."
Louisiana's freshman forward Claire Ruehle scored her second goal of the season in the first half to give the Cajuns an early 1-0 lead over the Jaguars. Ruehle's goal came in the 28th minute of the first half after she rocketed a shot from just outside the 18, placing the ball in the top left corner to beat the Jags keeper.
The Cajuns (7-10-2, 1-6-2 SBC) and South Alabama (7-9-3, 2-5-2 SBC) both got off 14 shots in the contest. The Jags held a 6-3 edge in corners.
South Alabama tied the match in the 62nd minute after Shawn Meach headed in a perfectly executed corner kick by Linsey Snavely.
Offensively, Hayden Gibson led the Cajuns with five shots, three being on target. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield made two saves. Moorefield, who is UL's all-time leader in career saves, has upped her total to 308.
The Cajuns close out the season on Friday, Oct. 26 for a senior day match against UL-Monroe. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cajuns will wear pink jerseys to be auctioned off.
