LAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana senior wide receiver and returns specialist Darryl Surgent, who set a school-record with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Kansas State on Saturday, has been named this week's Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
This is the first time that Surgent has been recognized by the Sun Belt Conference during his career.
"I am proud for Darryl," Louisiana head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "We had toyed with the idea of not having him return kickoffs and then he broke that kick at Kansas State and really provided us with a spark that got our offense going.
"Darryl has been a mainstay in our lineup the last three seasons and I expect good things from him the rest of the season," Hudspeth added.
Surgent infused some life into the Cajuns when he fielded a kickoff at his own goal line midway through the third quarter and returned it 100 yards for the score. The return broke the old school record of 99 yards set by Mike McDonald at Pensacola Navy in 1968.
Surgent, who also owns the third-longest kickoff return in school history with a 97-yard effort at Oklahoma State in 2011, is just the second player to bring back two kickoffs for touchdowns in a career. He shares the honor with Mike McKenzie (1961-62).
For the game, Surgent returned three kickoffs for 136 yards, caught three passes for 24 yards and carried once for two yards. His 162 all-purpose yards in the game allowed him to move past Brandon Stokley (3,789 yards from 1995-98) and into second place on the Louisiana career all-purpose yards list with 3,932 yards.
In his career, Surgent has picked up 1,277 yards receiving, 2,280 yards on kickoff returns, 338 yards on punt returns with 37 yards rushing. Surgent is averaging 105.6 yards all-purpose yards per game, the third-highest average in Cajuns history.
Surgent and the Cajuns return home to host Nicholls State on Saturday, Sept. 14 beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Cajun Field. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.com or by contacting the Cajundome ticket office at (337) 265-2100.
