LAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns junior punter Daniel Cadona, who had a career night in the regular season finale at South Alabama on Saturday, has been named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The Sun Belt office announced the final player of the week recipients on Monday.
"Daniel was a true bright spot in the game on Saturday," Louisiana head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "On a night when not much was going right, Daniel came through with his best performance as a Cajun, showing us the skills that made him one of the top punting recruits in the country last year."
A 6-4, 218-pound junior from Darwin, Northern Territory in Australia, set career highs for punts (8), yards (384) and average (48.0) against South Alabama.
Punting with a long field for one of the few times in his Cajuns career, Cadona strung together four consecutive punts of 50 yards or more in the second half (56 53, 57 & 51) and had three punts inside the 20.
The regular punter for the Cajuns in all 13 game this year, Cadona has punted 46 times for 1,924 yards and a 41.8 average. He has had 11 punts of 50 yards or more with 14 punts downed inside the 20 with only six touchbacks.
Cadona and the Cajuns will focus on fall semester finals for the next couple of days before returning to the practice field on Wednesday, Dec. 11 for their first practice in preparation for their third straight bowl appearance.
Louisiana will face Tulane in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 21 beginning at 8:00 p.m. CST in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
