The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is among the 2013 Best Colleges, according to the U.S. News Media Group.

UL Lafayette is cited in the best National Universities category in the annual guidebook for prospective college students. U.S. News lists 281 national universities -173 public, 101 private and seven for-profit - based on categories established by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

"Schools in the National Universities category, such as Columbia University and Stanford University, offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and Ph.D. programs. These colleges also are committed to producing groundbreaking research," U.S. News states on its website.

Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Tech University, Tulane University and the University of New Orleans are ranked in the National Universities category.

A total of 1,600 higher education institutions are compared on a set of indicators, such as peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

In August, The Princeton Review cited UL Lafayette as one of the nation's best 377 institutions for undergraduate education.

The U.S. Department of Education's College Affordability and Transparency List identified UL Lafayette as the most affordable university in Louisiana in June.

U.S. News' 2013 Best Colleges guidebook is available in stores on September 12.
