The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team picked up its second straight win on Wednesday after sweeping Youngstown State 7-0 at Cajun Courts.
"The guys did well today," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "I think that what you will see in the later part of the season is that the strength of schedule that we played early in the year will pay dividends for us. That's why I split the year into two seasons. We are 2-0 the second half of the season. I think it was important for us not to drop any sets today. That really helps us turn close matches in our favor."
The Cajuns (9-7) jumped out to a quick 1-0 edge after wins at No.2 and 3 doubles. Damian Farinola and Carl Alberton clinched the point for UL with an 8-4 win on court three.
Louisiana continued its strong play against Youngstown State (6-5) in singles as the Cajuns did not drop a set in singles competition.
Freshman Jake Wynan was the first to come off with a strong 6-0, 6-0 showing at the No.3 position, while Elliot Minvielle pulled the Ragin' Cajuns within a point from clinching after defeating Rodrigo Campos on court six, 6-2, 6-2.
Rick de Groot clinched the match for Louisiana at No.1 singles topping Silviu Mistreanu 6-4, 6-2 after falling behind early in the first set.
Yates Johnson and Hunter Goertz made the most of their appearance in the lineup as Johnson defeated Felipe Rosa 6-3, 6-4 on court four and Goertz overpowered Zeeshan Ismail 6-4, 6-3 on court five.
Edgar Lopez also posted a straight set victory at the No.2 position, 6-2, 6-4.
"It was really good to see Yates, Hunter and Elliot play well today," Jeffrey added. "They are making some great strides. Hunter has missed some time and been rusty, but he still won 6-4, 6-3. We really have a deep squad, and the guys are getting better. We feel like we have five or six guys that can play at the bottom of the lineup at any time. That kind of depth pushes players from the top to the bottom of the lineup to get better each time out."
Louisiana gets back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face in-state rival Tulane before hosting 61st ranked Samford on Monday at 2 p.m.
"We are really excited to face Tulane and Samford coming up this weekend," Jeffrey noted.
