UL Mens Tennis Comes Up Short 4-3 vs. No. 54 Miami (FL)

The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team came up just short of knocking off No.54 Miami (Fla.) as they fell 4-3 to the Hurricanes at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla. on Friday afternoon.

"We came out well in the doubles," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "We felt very confident headed into singles, and unfortunately we got beat in the middle of our lineup. We are a young team and everyone is trying to figure it out. We have to look for improvement in different areas, and we have to push to get better."

Louisiana (2-3) picked up the doubles point after wins at No.1 and 3 doubles. Twins Hunter and Yates Johnson finished first claiming an 8-4 win over Henrique Tsukamoto and Diego Soto at No.3 doubles to improve to 3-1 on the season.

On court one, Rick de Groot and Jake Wynan paired up to win their fifth straight doubles match defeating the team of Wilfredo Gonzalez and Marco Stancati 8-6.

"Rick and Jake played very well at number one doubles," Jeffrey added. "We are improving at both No.1 and No.3 doubles and that is giving us a lot of confidence heading into singles."

In singles play, the Hurricanes evened the match at 1-all after Victor Mauz topped sophomore Jarred Wynan, 6-2, 6-2, at No.4 singles.

Miami (Fla.) (5-2) added two more points after wins at No..2 and No.3 singles. Jake Wynan dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Gabriel Flores on court two, while Miami's Gonzales defeated Edgar Lopez 6-3, 7-5 on court three.

Hunter Johnson cut the Hurricane lead to 3-2 after his 7-6, 6-4 victory over Tsukamoto at No.5 singles. With the win, Johnson is now a perfect 4-0 on the season.

On court one, de Groot pulled Louisiana even at 3-all defeating Soto 7-5, 7-6 in a tough match to improve his singles record to 3-2 in the spring.

The Hurricanes clinched the match at No.6 singles as Hunter Johnson was defeated by William Albanese in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

"It all came down to Hunter Goertz on court six," Jeffrey said. "He got a little nervous and that cost him in the match today."

The Ragin' Cajuns continue their Florida road trip on Monday at 1 p.m. when they face No.62 North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.
