MUSCLE SCHOALS, Ala. - The Ragin' Cajuns golf team sits in eighth place after posting a first round score of 15-over par (303) on Monday at the 2013 Sun Belt Golf Championship at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
"I think apart from Thomas and Brandt, we fumbled coming down the stretch," head coach Theo Sliman said. "We played flat today and didn't have the focus we need to play at a championship level. The positive thing is that the guys are physically playing well. We just need to clean up our mental toughness over the next couple days. I think we can bounce back from this round, but we will need all five guys to step and post a good round."
No.49 South Alabama leads the field after the first day at four-under par (284). UALR (+5, 293), Georgia State (+7, 295), No.38 North Texas (+7, 295) and Middle Tennessee (+7, 295) round out the top five teams.
The Jaguars Lane Hulse sits atop the individual leaderboard at four-under (68), one stroke ahead of Middle Tennessee's Lucas Armstrong (-3, 69).
Senior Brandt Garon and freshman Thomas Strandemo led Louisiana on the first day and find themselves in the top 25 at three-over par (75) in a tie for 19th.
Yohann Vora is one shot back of Garon and Strandemo at four-over (76) in a tie for 28th, while Ross Davis rounded out the scoring carding a score of five-over (77) and sits in a tie for 35th.
The Cajuns are slated to tee off at 8:40 a.m. tomorrow and are paired with Arkansas State and Western Kentucky.
