The University of Louisiana at Lafayette unveiled a bronze statue of Dr. Edwin L. Stephens, its first president, who served from 1900 to 1938. Under his leadership, an empty sugar cane field was transformed into a college.
Stephens planted oak trees on campus on Jan. 1, 1901; some of them are still standing. He also created the Live Oak Society, a registry of mature live oaks that now includes more than 7,000 trees in 14 states.
