LAFAYETTE - The Ragin' Cajuns baseball team will open play in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. against FIU at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
The 2013 Sun Belt Conference tournament is scheduled to run Wednesday-Sunday, May 22-26 at "The Tigue". It's the fifth time the friendly confines serves as host with previous tournaments held in 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2008.
Louisiana (38-17, 19-11 Sun Belt) is the tournament's No. 3 seed and is paired with No. 2 seed South Alabama, No. 6 seed FIU and No. 7 UALR on one side of the bracket in the double-elimination event. Troy, Florida Atlantic, Western Kentucky and Arkansas State will compete in the opposite side of the bracket.
The Cajuns took 2-of-3 from FIU (25-30, 13-17 Sun Belt) in Miami the weekend of April 26-28 for their first series win over the Panthers since the 2007 season. After falling in 11 innings in the series opener, the Cajuns piled up multiple runs each of the first four innings and Cody Boutte came within an out of a shutout as UL won the middle game 9-1. On Sunday, Louisiana run-ruled FIU 14-4 in eight innings on the strength of nine extra base hits (five home runs) to capture the series win.
UL and FIU meet in the Sun Belt Tournament for the sixth time with the Panthers holding a 3-2 edge in the postseason event. Previous SBC Tournament meetings took place in Monroe, La. (2011), Troy, Ala. (2009), Mobile, Ala. (2000) and Metairie, La. (1999).
In the last SBC Tournament meeting, the Panthers defeated the Cajuns 11-8 in 10 innings in the final game of pool play of the 2011 SBC Tournament at Warhawk Field in Monroe.
The winner of the UL-FIU contest advances to Thursday's 7:30 p.m. winner's bracket contest. The loser is faced with an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.
This season the SBC tournament moved back to the double-elimination tournament after two years of pool play. Teams begin play on Wednesday, May 22 at 9:00 a.m. and the tournament will be conducted over five days culminating with the Championship Game on Sunday, May 26 at 1 p.m. All games will be available via web stream on the Sun Belt Digital Network. The championship game will be aired on the Sun Belt Network.
Championship festivities get underway on Tuesday night with Championship Family Night, a celebration of this season's accomplishments both on and off the field for the student-athletes in attendance. There will be a home run derby, autograph session, baseball cards for the fans and much more.
Tickets for the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament at "The Tigue" remain on sale. Only tournament booklets will be sold in advance. Prices are $75 for chairbacks (grandstand) and $45 for bleacher seating. All seating for the SBC Tournament will be reserved.

Single-game ticket sales will start on Wednesday, May 22. Prices will be $15 for chairbacks (grandstand) and $10 for bleacher seating.
Students from Sun Belt Conference institutions with a valid I.D. receive free admission (bleacher seating only). Children under age two will be admitted free of charge.
