UBS hosting blood drive Saturday for World Blood Donation Day

United Blood Services will be hosting a blood donation event Saturday in conjunction with World Blood Donor Day (WBDD).

The event will be held June 14 at the Lafayette donor center on Bertrand Drive from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Gannon Baca, Senior Donor Recruitment Representative, explains that WBDD is intended to make the public aware of "the need for safe blood products around the world; we also like to thank and honor those blood donors who make transfusion possible, and to encourage healthy, eligible individuals to give blood regularly."

This year's theme is, "Safe Blood for Saving Mothers" and "the campaign is designed to increase awareness about why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential for all countries as part of a comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths," Baca added, who stressed the importance for collecting as much type O blood as possible. Locally, this event provides us with the opportunity to bring special attention to a specific need for type O blood donors as the recent demand for type O blood has outpaced current supplies.

"Type O negative in particular can be given to anyone in an extreme emergency situation when there is no time to cross match the donor's blood with the patient's," explained Baca. Another special need for O-negative blood is in the treatment of babies. Neonatal care facilities require fresh units of O-negative blood each day to treat their tiny patients.

"In celebrating WBDD, United Blood Services honors blood donors for their important contributions within our community and encourages others to follow their example," said Baca, "It is important to ensure that blood is available whenever and wherever it is needed."
