COTEAU - Yesterday afternoon, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Broussard man. The crash occurred on LA 88 at US 90 in Iberia Parish.
According to investigating troopers, on April 14, 2010, at about 1:39 p.m., a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by nineteen-year-old Tyler Landry of New Iberia was traveling east on the US 90 exit ramp to LA 88. Landry was allegedly fleeing from a gas station where it was reported he had driven away without paying for gas. Landry disregarded a stop sign and a yield sign at the LA 88 intersection. A 1999 Honda Prelude driven by thirty-year-old Bounmy Phimmanichanh of Broussard was traveling north on LA 88. Landry's vehicle struck the left side of Phimmanichanh's vehicle.
After impact, both vehicles left the roadway and came to a rest. Landry's vehicle caught fire and was extinguished by responding firefighters. Phimmanichanh was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner. Landry sustained only minor injuries in the crash.
Landry was suspected of being impaired on narcotics and was placed under arrest. During the arrest Landry struck one of the troopers. He was booked into the Iberia Parish Correctional Center on the following charges:
Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated
Battery on a Police Officer
Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for results. The crash remains under investigation. The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the gas theft.
