Investigators are back on scene today of a double- murder in Opelousas. Two men were found dead last night in a residence. Police said the killer shot the men and then tried to burn the house down to cover his tracks.
It happened around ten Tuesday night on North Court Street in Opelousas. The suspect is still on the run.
Family members of 36-year-old Desmond Lewis said he was a family man and a great father to his five children. Lewis was renting the house to his good friend 49-year-old Gary Richard.
Neighbor Manuel Aaron said, "they were some nice guys, not the type of guys that would bother anybody,."
On Tuesday night Lewis was at the home visiting Richard. A neighbor saw smoke coming from inside and called 9-1-1.
Emergency personnel first thought they were responding to a fire, but after the firefighters put out the flames, they went inside to investigate and found two bodies.
Chief Perry Gallow with the Opelousas Police Department said, "each individual suffered one gun shot wound."
Chief Gallow said after the men were killed, whoever did it, then used some type of accelerator to light them on fire. At this point in the investigation, police believe it's drug related. So far there are no suspects in this case, Chief Gallow said the fire complicates the investigation.
"The firefighters are doing their part in extinguishing the fire, which sometimes does contaminate a crime scene. When you are trying to figure out exactly who is responsible, who was involved or who was in the residence at the time the crime was committed," Gallow said.
Neighbor Michelle Tyler said, "I never saw any disturbance at his house, that's why it's kind of crazy this happened."
Investigators are waiting on autopsy results tonight. No one saw the suspect, so now police are looking to the public for help. Call the Opelousas Police Department if you have any information on this crime.
