BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Two New Orleans-area lawmakers are under fire from House leaders for what some describe as shoddy attendance records with the budget-writing House Appropriations Committee.
House Speaker Jim Tucker says he's received complaints that Rep. John LaBruzzo of Metairie and Rep. Charmaine Marchand Stiaes of New Orleans have missed too many meetings or arrive late and leave early.
Tucker told The Times-Picayune he plans to talk to both of them about their attendance on the committee, which is one of the most labor-intensive in the House.
LaBruzzo and Stiaes both acknowledged missing a handful of meetings, but say their attendance records compare favorably with other committee members.
Tucker has the power to remove LaBruzzo from the panel, but Stiaes was elected by her fellow legislators and cannot be removed.
