Two people are dead after a single vehicle accident and police are still searching for the driver.
The accident happened at milepost 42 in northern St. Landry Parish just after 2:30 Saturday afternoon. Troopers say the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road, entered the grass median, and began to flip over. The driver of the vehicle was seen fleeing from the scene on foot into a wooded area near the interstate. Both unrestrained passengers were ejected from the vehicle.
Both passengers were transported to a local hospital in critical condition, and upon arrival at the hospital, one of the passengers was pronounced dead at the scene. The second passenger was listed in critical condition, but later was pronounced dead. Currently the identities of both passengers are being withheld pending the notification of next-of-kin.
The driver is described as a hispanic male who may have a minor injury to his head and nose. He should be in his mid to late 20's, has a medium build, and was last seen wearing a dark blue short sleeve shirt and khaki pants.
Troopers, deputies from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, and officers with the Opelousas Police Department searched the area for the driver but were unsuccessful.
