Two Arrested in Opelousas Shooting

From the Opelousas Police Department: The Opelousas Police Department's Special Operations Division has arrested Justin Charles, 812 Paggo Street Opelousas, and Antonio Babineaux, 835 Ballard Lane Opelousas, for Illegal Use of Dangerous Weapons or Instrumentalities.  The arrest stems from an altercation between the two men on April 03, 2010.  Babineaux was apparently at a friends residence located at 225 C Alley Opelousas when Charles pulled up in a vehicle and threatened Babineaux.  Charles allegedly then parked his vehicle on an adjacent street and began walking back to Babineaux's location.  Babineaux and Charles were allegedly in a confrontation when both men apparently drew guns on each other and began shooting.  Charles fled the scene in his vehicle while Babineaux remained at the scene.  Officers arrived and detained Babineaux and seized his weapon.  Charles turned himself and his firearm in later that afternoon.  Both were subsequently charged with one count each of Illegal Use of Dangerous Weapons or Instrumentalities and incarcerated into the Opelousas City Jail.

Chief Gallow advised that both men are currently being held in the Opelousas City Jail on Formal Applications for bond.  Theses are very serious offenses anyone in the neighborhood could have been killed I will not tolerate this in the city of Opelousas.  We have children in our neighborhoods this could have been tragic.

Again Chief would like to thank everyone who has given information that has assisted his officers with this and other investigations.  Anyone with information about a crime is asked to contact the Opelousas Police Department at (337) 948-2500 or St. Landry Crime Stoppers at (337) 948-8477
