NEW ORLEANS - On the heels of a record-setting performance during the Green Wave's 55-45 win over league foe UAB, Tulane University football standout Ryan Griffin was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday based on a vote of conference media members.
A 6-5 senior quarterback from Westlake Village, Calif., Griffin threw for a Tulane single-game record 466 yards and tossed a career-best five touchdown passes in the victory. The weekly honor is the first of the year for Griffin and the second of his career. The last time a Tulane student-athlete claimed C-USA Player of the Week honors was last Sept. 19, when Griffin was named C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
"Ryan played sensationally," first-year Tulane head football coach Curtis Johnson said. "He's been playing well all year, but this was one of his games where he was in a rhythm and he just dissected the defense. He was perfect. I couldn't ask for a better performance out of him. He deserves everything he gets and more. We just have to continue to let him lead us down to wherever we can go because he's doing fantastic."
Completing 34-of-42 passes, Griffin eclipsed the previous Green Wave single-game mark of 447 passing yards established by Patrick Ramsey against Army on Sept. 18, 1999. It was Griffin's third-straight game with 300-plus passing yards, and he became the first Tulane quarterback to accomplish that feat since J.P. Losman surpassed the 300-yard mark in the first four games of the 2003 season.
He completed passes to eight different receivers, including touchdown tosses to three different players. Griffin, who added three yards rushing, finished the day with 469 yards of total offense, which ranks second in Tulane single-game history beyond the mark of 484 (96 rushing/388 passing) established by Terrence Jones vs. TCU on Sept. 13, 1986.
Despite missing three and a half games due to a right shoulder injury, Griffin leads the Green Wave with 1,407 yards total offense, including 1,445 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air on 120-of-179 passing (.670) and only two interceptions for a quarterback rating of 152.89.
Since his return to the line-up three weeks ago against SMU, Griffin has completed 79-of-118 passes for 1,131 yards, 10 touchdowns and just one interception. Along the way, he has posted a 66.9 completion percentage and a 173.73 passer efficiency mark.
"You've got an experienced guy who knows what we want," Johnson added. "He knows our offense, he knows defenses and protections, and he's throwing the ball really well. I think everybody is more confident with him in there. He's just our leader on the field."
For his career, Griffin has completed 711-of-1181 passes (.602) for 7,700 yards, 47 touchdowns and 26 interceptions. He currently ranks first in Green Wave career history in completion percentage, second in pass attempts, attempts per game (31.08), completions and completions per game (18.71), tied for second in 300-yard games (8), third in passing yards, fourth in yards of total offense (7,447) and passing yards per game (202.6), fifth in touchdown passes, touchdown passes per game (1.237) and passing efficiency (123.70) and 10th in yards per pass attempt (6.519).
Griffin and the Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3, when they celebrate Homecoming 2012 against Rice in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Kickoff for that game is slated for 2:30 p.m. and tickets to that game, as well as future Green Wave events, are available through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office. The Ticket Office is located on the first floor of the Wilson Center on Ben Weiner Drive, and tickets can be purchased in person, over the phone at 504-861-WAVE (9283) or via the Internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
