Tulane group to monitor child labor in 2 countries

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Tulane University says its Payson Center for International Development has been awarded a three-year, $1.5 million grant by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The grand will finance child labor surveys in the cocoa-growing areas of two western Africa countries: Cote d'Ivoire (Kote dih vwar') and Ghana.

In a news release, the university says the funding is a follow-up to an earlier Department of Labor grant the Payson team received to collect data on West Africa's cocoa industry.

Between 2006 and 2011, Tulane and the Department of Labor collaborated to monitor progress made toward eliminating the worst forms of child labor and forced adult labor in the two countries.
