Tropical Storm Chantal

Newly formed Tropical Storm Chantal is quickly moving toward the Leeward and Windward Islands of the eastern Caribbean. Winds are sustained at 40mph with higher gusts. The tropical storm is moving westward at a brisk 26mph. With the southern location and the fast forward speed, Chantal isn't expected to strengthen much over the next couple of days. It should reach the islands Tuesday with winds between 50-60 mph.

The extended forecast brings Chantal south of Puerto Rico, and then turning northwestward over Haiti and the Dominican Republic. A trough of low pressure over the eastern U.S. should turn it northward toward the Bahamas and keep it out of the Gulf of Mexico.
