This afternoon, a Trooper with State Police Troop I was involved in a shooting on I-49 near milepost 40, just north of the Evangeline - St. Landry Parish line.
Troopers say, a Deputy with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office and a Trooper were responding to a two vehicle crash on I-49. When the Deputy arrived on scene, 22-year-old Byron Simon of Ville Platte, started running toward him. Troopers say, Simon, who was not wearing any clothes, got into the Deputy's vehicle and a struggle began. When the Trooper arrived a short time later, he saw Simon struggling with the Deputy and discharged his weapon. Then, while trying to take Simon into custody, he continued to fight. That's when the Trooper fired his taser at Simon.
Simon was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail for attempted disarming of a peace officer, simple battery, obscenity, simple burglary of an emergency vehicle, battery on a police officer and four counts of resisting a police officer.
No one was injured by the gunfire.
This case remains under investigation.
