GRAND BAYOU, La. (AP) - A Red River Parish railroad crossing will be closed for several days after a collision between a freight train and an 18-wheeler.
Authorities say the tractor-trailer's driver failed to yield and drove through flashing lights that warned of an approaching train, touching off a fire on a locomotive and causing nearly 20 cars to derail.
Nineteen cars on the train derailed Wednesday about 2:30 p.m. but none was carrying hazardous materials along U.S. 84 in Grand Bayou. A railroad spokesman says the derailed cars were
transporting sand and grain and some were empty. No evacuations were ordered.
KTBS-TV reports that the truck driver and three people on the train were taken to area hospitals. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
