Louisiana now ranks at the top of a national list. But unlike many rankings, this one we can be live with. Louisiana is first in the nation for donor designations.
According to Donate Life, 64% of people getting their drivers licenses in Louisiana register to become an organ donor. The national average is 38%. "That's like a real huge yay rah and the people of Louisiana are incredibly kind giving people," said LOPA employee Libbie Harrison.
According to the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, 18 people die each day waiting. "Every 12 minutes somebody is added to the list that's waiting for a life saving organ," said Harrison.
"I'm one of the lucky ones," said Larry Landry. The 68-year old has a new lease on life. He's just returned to work at his morse aircraft parts company, following a kidney transplant. He feels fortunate that someone gave him the give of life. "It makes you want to improve your life because you're getting a second chance," said Landry.
Landry is elated to hear Louisiana is at the top. He and his five children are registered donors already, knowing the importance of donating, even for now if its just a little red heart on a license.
