Do you remember when Louisiana's Ice Gators were an instant hit? It was the same year a famous sheep was born in Scotland. What year was it? It's in another chapter of This Week in Acadiana History for January 30, 2011.
The year was 1996. Scientists outside Edinburgh, Scotland created the world's first clone from an adult; a sheep named Dolly.
Here in Acadiana, Ice Gator fans made a creation of their own.
They're called 'Gator Chompers.' Props one fan made out of foam.
In 1996 and 1997, the Ice Gators had the highest attendance in the league- selling just about every seat in the house and everyone wanted a Gator Chomper.
It was a chomp hockey fans would be part of until 2005 when the team folded after having years of financial issues.
Then, in 2009, the chomp was brought back to life in the Southern Professional Hockey League.
