The Vermilion / Municipal Narcotics Task force conducted two drug raids recently which lead to the arrest of six persons, with several others being sought by the task force at this time. The raids were a culmination of several weeks of intelligence gathering on two separate locations which were known to be high drug trafficking areas.
The 1100 block of Green St. in Abbeville is not foreign to raids for suspected drug activity, in the past. In recent weeks, the drug activity has ramped up with several complaints being received. A new investigation discovered that at least ten to twenty people occupied the area of the 1100 block at one time, conducting illegal drug transactions. Upon further detailed surveillance of the area, agents were able to ascertain that the operation on Green St. was being run as an organized drug crime network. Their operation consisted of those who would deliver the suspected narcotics, those who dispersed it to runners and those runners who sold to buyers on the streets.
After obtaining felony arrest warrants and search warrants for two residences on Green St., agents with the task force enlisted the aid of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office Special Response Team (S.R.T.), Lafayette City Police Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (S.W.A.T.), and the Abbeville Police Department patrol and detective division.
Upon traveling to the area and deploying, the Special Units along with the Task Force contained the areas immediately and without incident. A search of the areas listed in the search warrants turned up prescription pills and crack cocaine, along with netting six arrests for narcotics violations.
Arrested in this incident were:
-Jacado Petry (dob 8-27-90) of Abbeville, arrested and charged with possession with the intent to distribute a schedule III narcotic (Hydrocodone), and conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine.
- Brandon Davis (dob 7-2-90), of Abbeville, arrested and charged with distribution of Crack Cocaine.
-Quincy Jones (dob 6-3-92) of Abbeville, arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine.
-Nyles Phillips (dob 10-28-88), of Abbeville, arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine.
-George Petry (dob 8-6-68), of Abbeville, arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine.
-Stephain Brailey, (dob 3-19-94) of Abbeville, arrested and charged with possession of transactions derived from drug offenses.
All arrest warrants and search warrants were signed by Judge Ed Broussard of the 15th Judicial District. Several more arrests are expected to stem from this investigation.
Sheriff Mike Couvillon would like to thank the following persons for their effort in assisting with Task Force personnel. Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza, Kaplan Mayor Kirk Champagne, Abbeville Chief of Police Tony Hardy and Kaplan Chief Boyd Adams "I realize times are financially tough all over, but the Mayors and Chiefs of these cities are committed to finding the funds to help the Task Force combat the illicit drugs problem that ruins our communities. The people of Vermilion and our children are the benefactors of these city leaders' great efforts. It is my hope that in the near future other towns and cities in the parish of Vermilion will be able to assist in the continuing fight against illicit drugs."
Finally, Sheriff Couvillon would like to applaud the concerned citizens of Vermilion Parish for their awareness and assistance in helping the Sheriff's Office in fighting the war on illegal drugs.
