Registration is currently underway for The Louisiana Marathon, a three-day running festival happening January 17 - 19, 2014 in Baton Rouge. Now in its third year, The Louisiana Marathon expects to attract 10,000 participants and 24,000 attendees from 47 states and 11 countries. A true celebration of running and Louisiana culture, The Louisiana Marathon seeks to inspire and motivate while establishing Louisiana as the running capital of the south.
"The Louisiana Marathon draws runners from all over the world," said Louisiana Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne. "More than just a race, The Louisiana Marathon offers the chance to showcase our unique culture to an adventurous and passionate crowd. And like The State of Louisiana, the three-day event has something for everyone. Runners, food lovers, music fans, shoppers and festival aficionados will all find their passion at The Louisiana Marathon," he said.
The Louisiana Marathon offers multiple races that include: The Marathon, The Half and The Advocate 5K and Kids Marathon. Fast, flat and rich in Louisiana culture, the courses for The Louisiana Marathon events will weave through the lakes, oak tree canopies and historic neighborhoods of Baton Rouge.
"In just two short years, The Louisiana Marathon has become a favorite of runners across the country," said Chuck ‘Marathon Junkie' Engle of Marathonguide.com. "The course, the Expo, the food, the people and the music combine to make The Louisiana Marathon an irresistible running event for participants at all levels, which explains why our readers gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars in 2013," said Engel.
The Expo, Finish Festival and Family Festival will entertain participants and spectators while showcasing the best of Louisianan culture.
Free and open to the public, The Expo at The Louisiana Marathon will be held on Friday, January 17 at The Baton Rouge River Center. The Expo will feature over 60 vendors with the latest trends, designs and advances in running shoes and apparel from various sports, fitness and nutrition providers.
Sunday's Finish Fest will include high-energy music from Big Sam's Funky Nation, a crowd-pleasing band from New Orleans who will entertain runners and spectators as they sample authentically delicious Louisiana food and drink.
Participants in The Advocate 5K and Kids Marathon on Saturday will enjoy Family Fest, which features a "Play Dirty" obstacle course, school bands and kid-friendly fare. Both Finish Fest and Family Fest are free and open to the public.
Like major marathons in New York and Boston, The Louisiana Marathon has a considerable charitable component. Last year, The Louisiana Marathon raised more than $75,000 for charitable contributions to a variety of organizations, including Team In Training, Girls on the Run and Teach For America. The 2014 fundraising goal is $250,000, an amount that organizers feel confident about, as half of that has already been pledged.
Participation in The Louisiana Marathon and The Half will be capped at 2,000 and 5,000, respectively, for 2014. Registration for The Marathon and The Half are on a first-come, first-served basis. The Advocate 5k and Kids Marathon are not capped at this time. Participants should register now, as fees will increase slightly as The Louisiana Marathon grows closer.
