Meanwhile, just east of Rayne, another festival kicks off in Port Barre. The 27th Annual Cracklin Festival has just opened it's gates at 5. The festival is the biggest fundraiser for the Port Barre Lion's Club, complete with rides, food and plenty of cracklin.
The annual Port Barre Cracklin Festival started in 1985 as a street festival hosted by the Lion's Club. Now, in it's 27th year, it attracts thousands of people to Port Barre. All of the proceeds fund projects within the state.
"We send money to the Lion's cripple children's camp in Leesville, LA. where an unfortunate kid, that has a disability, gets to go there for one week.... at no cost to him, and his parents," said Biscuit Brosco with the Lion's Club.
The festival contains all of the usual features, carnival rides, live music, a parade, food and of course a cracklin cook-off.
"We've got some new rides. We've got some better bands, I mean we got all kinds. We got one, Trick Pony, just to say a new band this year," said Brosco. "We got all kinds of good bands this year. New craft booths, some new cracklin cookers, I mean we do have that, which is the most important part. But other than that, we're going to have great weather, and we're going to have a great time."
Out of the 12 cracklin cookers, Bourque's Supermarket is planning on selling more than 1,500 pounds of cracklin.
"It'll open tonight at 5 p.m. with family night, where the fair will be open for all the rides," said Laurie Guillory with the Lion's Club.
Jessie Whittington is among the cracklin cookers this weekend for Bourque's Supermarket. He's says he's been cooking it all his life.
"And it's not hard to do, it just takes time, lots of stirring, watch it," said Whittington. "You can't drink too many beers when your doing it, but after, you can enjoy the beer."
The festival runs through Sunday, admission is $5. Children 10 and under get in free.
Tomorrow, gates open at 5 with Geno Delafose playing at 7:30. Closing out the night starting at 10, Krossfyre will be playing.
