The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office has given raises to all staff members.
The Courier reports the sheriff, who makes about $150,000, said he did not take a raise.
Sheriff Jerry Larpenter says he gave a $200 per month raise to everybody in his office.
The raises went into effect Jan. 1 for about 300 employees. The raises won't cost taxpayers any money.
The sheriff's office will receive a larger cut of city tax dollars this year, which will allow for the extra cash. The office gets a portion of the property tax money because it collects the taxes.
The Parish Council agreed Monday to give Larpenter's office 6 percent of the city's property taxes, which totals about $243,307. It had received only 4.5 percent since the 1980s.
