GONZALES, La. (AP) - Deputies have arrested students at two Ascension Parish schools in unrelated arson cases.

Johnnie Balfantz, school system spokesman, tells The Advocate the fires were set in restrooms at St. Amant High and Lowery Middle schools. Balfantz says the damage was minimal, and no one was hurt.

Firefighters were called to St. Amant High about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, where a soap dispenser had been set on fire. By the time deputies arrived, Chief Deputy Tony Bacala says administrators had identified a 16-year-old student as a suspect.

A little more than two hours later, the Donaldsonville Fire Department was called to put out a fire in a Lowery Middle restroom. Bacala says a 14-year-old student was arrested.

Both students were booked with one count of aggravated arson.
