NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Three New Orleans police officers have been
placed on administrative leave following the weekend shooting death
of a teenager.
Officers were responding to a call of shots fired Sunday night
when they were directed to a person carrying an assault rifle.
Officers confronted the person and ordered him to drop the weapon.
When the suspect allegedly pointed the rifle at the officers,
they fired several times hitting him in the body.
The victim was identified as Jamyrin Points, 17, police said
Monday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
None of the officers involved was injured.
Another person in a nearby neighborhood was shot in the ankle
and is listed in stable condition. Police believe the injury
happened at the time of the teen's shooting.
Deputy Superintendent Marlin Defillo tells WWL-TV that officers
recovered the fully-loaded rifle and also found a loaded,
semiautomatic pistol nearby.
