Nineteen-year-old Johnathon George is charged with attempted first-degree murder after deputies say he struck his grandmother several times in the head with a blunt object, possibly a piece of wood.

It happened around 2:00 Friday morning on Goodie Street in Maurice.

The victim is 68-year-old Rita Mouton, whose daughter called 911 when she found out what was going on next door.

Another one of her duaghters, Mary Francis, says the whole family has been visiting her in the hospital.

"I'm concerned about my mother. She was brutally beaten by my nephew with a piece of firewood and was left for dead," she says.

Deputies say they do not have a motive for the attack.

"We're looking at several things right now and our investigators are in the field now speaking with family and others; the motive is not confirmed," says Captain Kip Judice from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.

George is waiting a bond hearing.
