Residents along Fremin Road in Iberia Parish are speechless after learning of the murder of their neighbor and friend 78 year old Oscar Figueroa.
"It's such a shock, that's all I can say," said Lionel Abatte, who has lived on Fremin Road all his life, and knew Figueroa.
Iberia Parish Sheriff's Deputies were called to 6307 Fremin Road just before 7:00 a.m. for an assault. Figueroa's 11 year old great-granddaughter called 911 saying that her great-grandfather was dead.
"The man was dead, and the girl was transported to the hospital with serious injuries," said Captain Wendell Rayborn with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Department.
Rayborn says the girl and her great-grandfather were attacked sometime in the night by 34-year-old Jonathan Latham. Hours before the attack, Latham was allegedly involved in the attempted murder of Figueroa's great-grandson in Erath, the son of Latham's former long-time girlfriend. Family members say it's the latest in a history of violence Latham's brought to the family.
"He's assaulted all these people, he's assaulted my brother-in-law, he's assaulted the kids, he's a dangerous person," said Chantelle Tucker, who is an aunt of Figueroa's great-grandson.
At last check, the 11 year old girl was being treated at a Lafayette hospital with serious injuries, a cause of death for her great-grandfather has not been released. Authorities were also unable to comment on a motive for the attack.
Latham was last seen driving Figueroa's black Honda Civic. It has handicap license plate reading H29-8023. Anyone with information is asked to call the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office at 337-369-3711.
