LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - Two weeks after a teacher saved his life, 7-year-old Bowen Johnson is back at school with an implanted heart defibrillator. The American Press reports the first-grader's heart stopped during physical education April 11 at Western Heights Elementary in Lake Charles.
Adapted physical education teacher Ken Flue says that when Bowen collapsed, he moved the boy into the shade and found that he had a faint pulse and was barely breathing. Then his breathing stopped. Flue began rescue breathing and CPR while a special-education aide ran to tell the front office to call 911.
Flue kept Bowen breathing for 10 minutes, until an ambulance arrived.
Doctors at Children's Hospital New Orleans implanted a defibrillator.
