Taxi driver shot in Metairie

METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies say a taxi driver was shot during an attempted robbery.

The Times-Picayune reports the driver is in stable condition following Sunday's shooting.

The driver told officers he picked up a passenger in the French Quarter, and was directed to a Metairie address. As he neared the house, the driver said he was being followed by a white car with tinted windows, but suspected it was an unmarked police car.

Once at the house, the passenger told the driver he did not have enough money to pay the cab fare, and went inside the house. The white car pulled up alongside the taxi and two men got out, demanding money. Deputies say the driver refused to turn over the money and he was shot.
