Just in times for tax season, the IRS is working with Louisiana, L.L.C. to put millions of dollars into state residents and the state's economy.
The company is sponsoring Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites and supporting EITC Awareness Day and Super Tax Day events throughout its service area. The program will provide free tax preparation help to those who qualify and promote the Earned Income Tax Credit. State residents who earn under $50, 000 may qualify for EITC and receive free tax preparation assistance at local VITA sites.
"Studies have shown that the EITC helps reduce poverty," said Liz Duhon, customer service manager for Entergy Gulf States Louisiana. "Some families use EITC payments for significant purchases, such as a home or to pay off debts. Others use the credit to start saving for the future."
Entergy Gulf States Louisiana's efforts bolster both the IRS and United Way campaigns to educate taxpayers about the EITC, requirements to claim the tax credit and locations where taxpayers can receive free tax services.
Entergy will participate in Super Tax Days 1 p.m. - 8 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Clifton Chenier Center, 220 W. Willow St. in Lafayette, La., and 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Feb. 4 at Acadiana Technical College, 1101 Bertrand Dr. in Lafayette, La. At these events, qualifying individuals and families can have their taxes prepared for free and determine EITC eligibility.
For a complete list of EITC requirements, interested applicants should review publication 596, which is available by calling the IRS at 1-800-TAX FORM (1-800-829-3676) or by visiting the IRS website at irs.gov/eitc http://www.irs.gov/eitc. Additionally, information about local VITA sites is available by calling 211 or by visiting the Louisiana United Way website, launitedway.org http://www.launitedway.org/.
