TALLULAH, La. (AP) - Tallulah's City Council has put off choosing an acting mayor to finish the late Mayor Eddie Beckwith Jr.'s term.
Councilman Tommy Watson says several members had questions and want advice from the state attorney general's office. He tells The News-Star that the council decided Friday to consider the matter at its April 10 meeting.
Beckwith died Thursday. He had been among candidates for an April 5 election.
Qualifying now will continue through Tuesday, with the mayoral election May 3. Four Democrats qualified earlier; a fifth entered the race Friday after qualifying reopened.
Beckwith's term expires June 30.
His body will lie in repose Monday at City Hall, with visitation Monday evening at Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church. His funeral will be Tuesday evening at Tallulah Madison Community Center.
