LOUREAUVILLE, La. (AP) - A one-lane swing bridge near
Loreauville is officially historic. Members of the grass-roots
group Save Vida Bridge recently got a certificate stating that the
Vida Shaw bridge built in the 1930s is on the National Register of
Historic Places.
Member Danny David Jr. tells The Daily Iberian that the
three-year fight was long and hard, but very rewarding.
Farmers and other residents opposed their effort because the
bridge currently isn't working and they wanted a replacement to
ease traffic on Louisiana 86 and give easier access for sugar cane
trucks.
The campaign to save it started after the state decided to
remove and replace it.
