A man who escaped from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is back in custody. Donte Harris, 17, escaped through a back office door after 1:00 this morning as a deputy was preparing his booking paperwork. He was captured shortly after his escape and was found still handcuffed walking in a cement coulee on St. Mary Street, which is a few blocks from the Sheriff's Office Administration Building. Harris, of Patterson, was arrested Tuesday afternoon shortly after 5:00 during a traffic stop in the 900 block of Ridge Road after deputies discovered 20 grams of marijuana wrapped in 15 separate packages, Capt. Kip Judice said. "Harris was transported to the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center where he remains pending bond hearings for the possession with intent to distribute marijuana, resisting an officer, and simple escape charges along with the two outstanding warrants from St Mary Parish," Judice said.
During the traffic stop, deputies also arrested London West, 22, of Duson and charged him with possession of one gram of marijuana and obstruction of justice. "Mr. West is accused of attempting to swallow a bag which contained approximately one gram of marijuana as deputies asked him to step from the vehicle," Judice said. Deputies stopped him from swallowing the bag and recovered the marijuana.
