Suspect charged in Abbeville hostage situation

A Berwick man is charged with armed robbery, false imprisonment, and aggravated assault in connection with Thursday's hostage situation in Abbeville.

Police say 28-year-old Dean Beranek broke into a home near the corner of Third and Jefferson Streets looking for drugs.

According to investigators, the victims said Beranek was armed with a pipe and a torch. Beranek allegedly threatened to harm the victims if they did not return money and a car that a friend of the victims supposedly took from him.

Two other suspects who were detained by police were later released without charges.

Beranek faces two counts of armed robbery and three counts each or false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault. He is being held in the Vermilion Parish Jail without bond.
