A reported armed and dangerous person was quickly taken into custody on the campus of Creswell Elementary school located at 1208 E. Leo Street. The incident began as officers with the Opelousas Police Dept., St. Landry Sheriff's office, Leonville Police Dept and the Ward I Marshals office responded to the Wal-Mart shopping center at approximately 2:40 PM to investigate a call of a female that was in distress and was hiding from her child's father because he was threatening to do her harm, and he was armed with a knife.
Upon officers responding to the initial call the suspect who was later identified as Kevin Savoy, fled from the Wal-Mart parking lot across I-49 and ran onto the campus of Creswell Elementary, where he attempted to hide from officers by climbing into a crawl space near the schools office area.
After a brief search he was taken into custody without indecent. School Board officials including Superintendent Michael Nassif also responded to the school to assist in the crisis. No one was injured and the school operation was interrupted for only a short time near the end of the school day.
Police said no child was put in any immediate danger, due to the school going into lock down immediately upon becoming aware of the situation.
Upon further investigation it was determined that Savoy had just been released from custody form the St.Landry Sheriffs office on Thursday around 1230 P.M. for violating a protective order and resisting an officer. It was the same female that called in the complaint today, that was involved in the prior incident on Wednesday in the Leonville area.
A knife was located at Wal-Mart in the victim's car. Savoy will be booked on numerous charges including violation of a protective order, simple kidnapping, felony criminal damage to property (for destruction of school property) and resisting an officer by flight.
The initial charges will be handled by the Leonville Police Dept. and the subsequent charges will be handled by the Opelousas Police Department.
