MONROE, La. (AP) - Monroe police have arrested a 26-year-old man accused of stealing nearly $16,000 with false money orders.
The News-Star reports (http://bit.ly/p1oaB2 ) Jonathan Smith of Monroe was booked into Ouachita Correctional Center on a bank fraud charge.
According to an arrest affidavit, police arrested Smith after he made several deposits using counterfeit U.S. Postal Service money orders, which allegedly totaled $15,935.
During an investigation, Smith told police he had spent about $12,000 of the money. After allowing a search of his vehicle, police found 10 more false USPS money orders for $955 each. Police also found four overnight envelops which Smith said had more false money orders inside.
It was unclear whether Smith has an attorney.
