United Way of Acadiana and the Junior League of Lafayette are partnering to fill 1,000 Summer Reading Bags. The bags will go to local children during National Volunteer Week. The event will take place at the United Way of Acadiana office at 215 E. Pinhook Road on Wednesday, April 24th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
According to the United Way, "The goal of the project is to help students maintain their literacy skills by making books available to them and to encourage them to read during the summer break. Students can lose the equivalent of two months reading instruction during the summer if they are not involved in classes, camps or other recreational experiences."
United Way of Acadiana received a $10,000 grant from the Junior League of Lafayette for the Summer Reading Bags program. With the grant, 5,000 books and activity books were purchased for 1,000 students.
Junior League members will be stuffing 1,000 bags for local 1st and 2nd grade students who attend Lafayette Parish elementary schools with a School Performance Score of a C- or less.
