NEW ORLEANS (AP) Two lawsuits over a man's fatal shooting by New Orleans police on New Year's Day 2009 are on hold while the Justice Department investigates the case.
In a court filing, lawyers for relatives of Adolph Grimes III said they met with a federal prosecutor who confirmed that the 22-year-old's death is under investigation.
U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt agreed Friday to shelve the family's two consolidated suits temporarily.
Grimes is a New Orleans native who moved to Texas after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
He was parked outside his grandmother's house when he was confronted by plainclothes officers investigating a shooting outside a bar. The lawsuits claim police had no justification for shooting at Grimes as he ran away.
