Six of the 13 students arrested as a result of a riot at Opelousas High School on Sept. 23 will begin serving a month in the Opelousas City Jail Thursday afternoon.
Judge Vanessa Harris also dropped charges against two other students, Jessica Thomas and Tamonique Thomas, saying that they were actually trying to break up the fight rather than being active participants.
The six students who were sentenced received six months in jail, but that sentence was suspended. Instead, they will serve one month in jail and two years on probation. They are also banned from making any contact, whether in person, online or by any other means, with any of the victims of the brawl.
The students are also banned from all St. Landry Parish school campuses and activities for the next two years and must perform 200 hours of community service within six months, along with paying a $10 per month maintenance fee.
Harris said the students will be allowed to attend alternative schools in the parish, but will not be able to participate in any extracurricular activities.
Those sentenced Wednesday are:
-- Kevin Savoy, 17
Pleaded guilty to simple battery and disturbing the peace.
-- John Texada, 18
Pleaded guilty to simple battery, disturbing the peace and simple assault.
-- Marsell Walker, 18
Pleaded no contest to disturbing the peace and simple battery.
-- Antonio Malveaux, 17
Pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace and simple battery.
-- Deztini Thomas, 17
Pleaded no contest to simple battery.
-- Lyric James, 17
Pleaded no contest to simple battery and criminal trespass.
James is already incarcerated on the criminal trespassing charge.
The other five will report to the Opelousas City Jail at 3:30 p.m. Thursday to begin serving the imposed 30 days of their sentences. If they violate the the terms of the sentencing or probation, they will have to serve the remaining five months in jail.
The remaining students will face a juvenile court judge in Opelousas next month.
