NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A weekend of faith-based support for one of the New Orleans area's major employers is being planned for September.
The AFL-CIO says student interns taking part in its "Union Summer" program are organizing the "Pray for Avondale Weekend" Sept. 9-11.
The union says the event will involve churches and faith leaders who are being asked to address the pending closure of Avondale Shipyard in sermons or by having a worker from the shipyard speak to congregations.
Avondale is slated for closure in early 2013. Various groups and public officials are looking for ways to forestall the closure or find new tenants for the shipyard, which employs more than 5,000 people.
