Student accused of ramming pregnant teacher

A Northside High School student is accused of ramming his shoulder into a pregnant teacher's belly as she was trying to stop him from fighting with another student, an arrest affidavit states. Charles Everette Benjamin Jr., 17, is charged with battery on a school teacher. He was arrested Thursday after his teacher reported the incident to School Resource Officer Melvin Riddell.

The arrest affidavit says Benjamin tried to open the classroom door after the teacher instructed another student to leave the room to prevent the student's from fighting. "Charles Benjamin attempted to open the door from inside the classroom," according to the affidavit. Riddell says the teacher and Benjamin struggled for control of the door, and Benjamin ended up opening the door. At that point, the teacher stood in the doorway, and instructed Benjamin to remain in the classroom. "Benjamin then lowered his shoulder and rammed his shoulder into her stomach," the affidavit states. The teacher says she started bleeding after being hit. According to the affidavit, Benjamin told the resource officer he was trying to leave the classroom to confront another student in the hall.
