Still awaiting coroner's report in death of man in OPD custody

State police is still awaiting word from the medical examiner in the death of an Opelousas man who died in Opelousas Police Department custody following an incident at Evangeline Downs Casino last Wednesday.

"We are waiting for the coroner's report. It remains under investigation," said Louisiana State Trooper Stephen Hammons.

OPD reports that just before 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, they found several security officers restraining 31-year-old Burley Washington, also known as Ricky Gloston, of Opelousas.

Officers say they transported Washington to the jail, but he collapsed while being removed from the patrol unit. An ambulance was called, and Washington was taken to the hospital where he died. Washington was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where he died.

Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow says he's asked State Police investigate, which is standard protocol in these types of situations.

The autopsy was scheduled to have been performed on Friday, March 7.
