The town of Sterlington filed a second lawsuit against the Ouachita Parish Police Jury, asking the court to declare the 1977 parish-wide sales tax for roads unconstitutional.
Earlier this month the town filed a lawsuit against the Police Jury in state court over its share of the one-cent parish-wide sales tax the Police Jury collects for road and maintenance projects.
Now, Mayor Vern Breland said the tax should be declared unconstitutional because of the jury's failure to create a special taxing district in 1977 when it removed Monroe and West Monroe from the tax collection.
Police Jury President Shane Smiley told The New-Star he is disappointed the town has taken this route.
