BOSSIER CITY, La. (AP) - A Bossier City woman being held on negligent homicide charges in the death of her 5-year-old stepdaughter has seen the charge upgraded to first-degree murder.
On Tuesday, Bossier Parish Undersheriff Doyle Dempsey said the charges were upgraded because his investigators feel Catherine Murray Lowe intended to kill or inflict great harm on her stepdaughter Anna Lowe.
Lowe and her husband, Wesley Dwayne Lowe, have been in custody since the child died Jan. 13. The coroner says the girl had been dead for about two hours before she was taken to the emergency room.
Sheriff's investigators say the child's stomach was detached from her intestines and her liver was lacerated in two places.
