LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Federal agents have arrested an Acadiana High School teacher who allegedly had allowed students to have sex in his Lafayette apartment while he filmed them.
According to court records unsealed Wednesday, 37-year-old Stephen McKay Hurst was arrested March 26 on federal counts of sexual exploitation of children and attempted sexual exploitation of children for the purpose of producing child pornography.
Angie Simoneaux, a spokeswoman for the Lafayette Parish School System, says Hurst has been on leave with pay since last week.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Patrick Hanna on Thursday ordered Hurst detained pending trial, citing the nature of the charges and Hurst's possible violation of the teacher-student relationship.
It wasn't immediately clear if Hurst has an attorney.
