State to Test Ballot Scanning System

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Secretary of State's
Office has been given the go-ahead to test a new paper ballot
scanning system.
The system could be used statewide as early as the spring of 2012.
Secretary of State Tom Schedler says the system will read paper ballots and save them to a computer, thus cutting down the time and cost of counting paper ballots on election night.
The agency, along with registrars of voters and clerks of court will inspect the system to make sure it meets legal standards. Then it will be sent to an independent testing laboratory.
