The State Department of Education will take over Creswell Elementary School next academic year. Interim St. Landry Parish Schools Superintendent Joseph Cassimere made the announcement during last night's board meeting. Cassimere says he received a letter from the Department of Education earlier this week announcing the takeover. Cassimere tells KATC that the school--which, for the fourth consecutive year, is labeled by the state as a failing school--will be operated by the state's Recovery School District. Cassimere adds that the St. Landry Parish School Board will have to maintain and pay for the school's operation, while the RSD would receive all grants and other educational funding awarded to the school.
According to Cassimere, the 2013-2014 academic year will probably be the last year Creswell Elementary will be a traditional school. Cassimere says he expects the state to convert Creswell into a charter school in time for the 2014-15 session.
